Discussion

Lisa McCarthy (asker) Mar 8, 2008:
MISTAKE! Sorry guys - didn't mean to hit the button to award points. Just wanted to send a not. I really think it's time Proz did something about this!!!

I think I'm going to go with something like "Black pudding (sweet-shaped treat)" or to that effect.
David Russi Mar 7, 2008:
I don't think any term such as candy is appropriate here, it would be misleading to the person trying to imagine what this is. I think a rendition closer to "small pieces" would make the most sense.
Rachel Fell Mar 7, 2008:
If you put "Morcilla 'bonbons'" (i.e. inverted commas) people would ask anyway, usually: if they're in that special shape, it'd be nice to refer to it -?
Wil Hardman (X) Mar 7, 2008:
I think bon-bons/candies/sweets is fine; it is a more accurate translation and makes the dish seem more exciting. Morcilla may confuse English speakers so I would put an explanation (Spanish black pudding).
Lisa McCarthy (asker) Mar 7, 2008:
Thanks for links to pics. But if you saw Morcilla Bonbons/candies listed on a menu (without the pic) would you be able to envisage it or would you be totally lost? A sweet doesn't necessarily have that shape. Maybe best to use Morcilla Bites or something like that?
Rachel Fell Mar 7, 2008:
agree, great link from Sandra!
Sandra Holt Mar 7, 2008:
Lisa, this link may help you decide. They seem to be called "caramelos" due to their shape. http://www.directoalpaladar.com/2007/11/24-caramelos-de-morc...
Steven Capsuto Mar 7, 2008:
I've certainly heard of caramelized sausage. I wonder if it could be that.
Lisa McCarthy (asker) Mar 7, 2008:
it´s listed under the starters and the items before and after have nothing to do with it.
Noni Gilbert Riley Mar 7, 2008:
Hmm. It sounds from your posting as if this is going to be "a secas", but perhaps it might help us if you cd tell us what comes before and afterwards on the menu. Are they starters/para picotear?

Crunchy "morcilla" bites

I have just found another link which shows a different picture to the first one I suggested: http://www.revistaimpar.com/contenidos/ver-articulo.asp?inde...
Bearing this photo in mind, perhaps this could be a possible option.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "thanks Sandra - but I don't think it's one of these as you only get one (unidad) on your plate - a bit tacaño no? "

Treats

Blood Sausage Treats

As Noni indicates, without further context ...

I interpret the item to be some kind of special, probably small, presentation of morcilla. Breaded? With a sweet sauce? Who knows, and my answer is sufficiently ambiguous to cover a lot of territory.
Peer comment(s):

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : Black Pudding treats for UK English! Good idea. Or Black Pudding Lozenges if we only knew what it looked like...

Thanks, Noni. I like the sound of Black Pudding better than Blood Sausage. ;-> And perhaps Treats sounds more appetising than Lozenges...

black pudding canapes/black pudding bon-bon

They are obviously small so canape for a more general/ less risky translation. Also black pudding bon-bon does seem to incorporate the idea of sweets.
See the link,

Peer comment(s):

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : These are excellent suggestions! And I think the latter wd describe well Sandra´s magnificent link above.

Thanks Noni, it was just a guess but bon-bons seems to fit quite well.
agree Rachel Fell : bon-bons (or as one word) but morcilla, as black pudding is either specif. UK or is used as a generic term http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pudding - yes, explanation of morcilla if nec.

Thanks Rachel, you are right.. 'morcilla (Spanish black pudding)', tastier than the UK version.

blood sausage bites

I worked in restaurants for a couple of years, here in US, and also I like to go out to Argentinian and Spanish restaurants as a customer, and morcilla is called a blood sausage. I will add bites to let people know that we are talking about caramelos=small.

(small) black pudding pancake/crepe- black pudding pancake bite/canape

The recipe is quite clear, it is not a sweet, it is a starter, though it may be combined with apple or others as matching ingredients, apart from it, for a contrast.
It is basically a morcilla-black pudding in a pancake.

Third paragraph after "no solo pescado" in this page:
http://www.elmundo.es/papel/2004/01/16/madrid/1561675.html

I haven't heard of an official translation, only seen it kept in spanish with an explanation in english. But this is the english equivalent as far as I can think.
