English term

designing [networks]

English to Spanish Social Sciences International Org/Dev/Coop collaborative services

They have to consider themselves part of a complex mesh of new DESIGNING networks: the emerging, interwoven networks of individual people, enterprises, non-profit organizations, local and global institutions that are using their creativity and entrepreneurship to take some concrete steps towards sustainability.

Yes... I was just researching the rest of the article. It turns out that it's taken from a book that is freely available as a PDF download; so I grabbed it, and there's a paragraph from which the text I included was taken.
As a reference to anyone who reads this, here's the complete sentence from the book (my article is an edited excerpt):

"In fact, whether they like it or not, everyday people have to design and redesign their business, their neighbourhood, their associations and their ways of living. The result is a society that appears as a mesh of designing networks: a complex system of interwoven design processes, involving individual people, enterprises, non-profit organizations [...]"

I guess that shows you were right. Thanks for the help!

Angel: Is there something in the text that leads you to believe this might be the case (i.e., "redes inteligentes")? I'm not so sure I see that from the brief sample that you've posted.
Ángel Domínguez (asker) Jan 30, 2009:
¿Redes inteligentes?

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that these networks might be considered a collective work "in process," and that the use of "designing" reflects the on-going nature of the work; that is, they're currently being designed (thanks to the "creativity and entrepreneurship" of those involved in these "emerging interwoven networks").

I hope this helps!

IN RESPONSE TO (TransRight):
I'd say that the use of "designing" as an adjective to convey the idea that what is being designed continues to be so, is not uncommon. In fact, if the phrase were "[a combination of] developing programs," would it not be grammatically correct or clearly understood that (perhaps many) programs were being developed (simultaneously)? As for the possibility that "designing" might mean that this is what the networks do (i.e., design), I'd question whether the writer wouldn't have just said "design networks" in that case. Is that not what they would be (i.e., networks that design)?

Saludos.
