German term

Wärmesumpf

German to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Patents
"Dies gewährleistet eine effektive Wärmeabfuhrt und dient somit als sog. Wärmesumpf".
I suppose this is actually a heat shield but it there a specific translation for it? This is all in connection with a LED patent and experts' advice will be appreciated.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +5 heat sink
2 heat sump

Discussion

BusyB Mar 5, 2009:
"Sump" has usually to do with reservoirs and liquids. Is there anything in this that might suggest that? Otherwise I'd use heat sink.

heat sink

is what I know from my ham radio days.

Here is a selection of pics of small heat sinks - there are enormous ones about too, but they would hardly fit your context, methinks...:

As you see, they are designed with fins, or vanes, the function of which is to take the heat away from its source and dissipate it in safety.

neutral Ruth Wiedekind : Im Prinzip ja. Andersherum übersetze ich "heatsink" üblicherweise mit "Kühlkörper" (aber das wäre ja eine Rückübersetzung...)

Equally, a "Kühlkörper" would hardly fit on a PCB, would it...
agree Richard Stephen : From the context it sounds like a 'heat sink' to me. Never heard of a 'heat sump', but that appears to be a completely different context.

neutral BusyB : "Kühlkörper" come in all shapes and sizes and can be fitted to or onto boards or even individual components.

Yes, but they are ACTIVE: That's not what I read into the gadget SwissTell has.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "many thanks to both of you, David and Ruth. It was tempting to go with "sump" to to the "Sumpf equivalent", but the LED argument helped the decision."

Da im Text "sog. Wärmesumpf" steht und bei Patenten "alles" möglich ist, lasse ich meinen Vorschlag erst mal stehen.

neutral David Moore (X) : We're talking LEDs here, though. I'd agree with you if we were talking large-scale equipment, but your "Kühlkörper" and "heat sump" are active pieces of kit, while a heat sink is not...
