Arabic term (edited): أُصيبَت مَقاتله
Selected

He is finished

المقاتل بفتح الميم جمع مَقتَل بفتح الميم والتاء, وهي على وزن مَفعَل، أي اسم المكان من الفعل قتل
المقتل هو موضع الجسم الذي إذا أُصيب بجرح لا يُرتجى النجاة منه
وفي اللغة الإنجليزية يُسمَّى مثل هذا الموضع في الجسم
a kill spot

See for example the following discussion:

".... I know many will say a gun is much more lethal, but only if you go for a kill spot like the head or chest..."

I mention this not by way of translating it, but only by way of explaining it. I belive the phrase أُصيبت مَقاتله should be translated as a whole.

عبارة أُصيبَت مَقاتله كناية عن هلاك المرء
والمقصود بالهلاك هنا هلاك مقامه عالماً

He is finished, perished, doomed, done for, done in, etc.

he would start slipping

"I don't know" is the scholar's last line of defence, if he abandoned it, he would become vulnerable.

In other words,

It is not shameful for a scholar to say "I don't know" when he really does not know.

His weaknesses

The term مقاتل is the plural of مقتل which is the weak point on the body where if attacked can kill. An Achilles Heel if you wish. The text means that if a scholar/scientist is too arrogant to say "I don't know", he'd be open to criticism that may put an end to his credibility.

fatal flaw

A scholar's fatal flaw is to refrain from saying "I don't know".
