RSL

A Jukebox of People Trying to Change the World”.

AB: You return from Kiosko and start almost immediately with the frieze project at the art fair this year called “These Airwaves Neutralise the Tools of Oppression; A Radio Station of People Trying to Change the World”. You began the collection archive of songs in 2003 and it is still ongoing, can I ask how 'The Ballad of Accounting' slots into the collection?

RE: I started 'A Jukebox of People Trying to Change the World' 4 years before the Artangel project. The Ballad of Accounting is not actually in the Jukebox. I limit myself to two songs maximum per recording artist and there are other songs of Ewan MacColl's in the archive. The Artangel project was triggered by the release of the MI5 files on MacColl in 2006, although as with lots of my projects, they all overlap in some way or another. Every time I show the Jukebox I try to update the material so its constantly being edited, the meaning of the songs shift too, or people suggest more material. One of the things I am doing here in Bolivia is expanding the Latin American music in the archive. I don't really see an end to the Jukebox at the moment; there are still huge gaps in its coverage which will gradually be filled. It's quite a history lesson researching the material - it can get rather obsessive. At the moment the archive contains almost 2000 songs which will be broadcast via an ***RSL*** from "frieze" and also streamed digitally online. The songs will be played back to back for the duration of the fair, 24 hours a day.
