German term
Wir Wunderschönen
German to English

idioms
The idea is that some Europeans are happy at the idea that the dollar might collapse, and with it the United States, because Europe would emerge unscathed. And then: Wir Wunderschönen, wir schaffen das.
I get the meaning, that "we're all right here, we'll manage." But I can't good way of expressing the "Wir Wunderschönen."

We, resplendent in our manifest superiority, ...
pours it on a bit thick but the German seems to invite such a translation

: I would have definetely used something with "superior(ity)", too. That's just the same style as the German

Comment: "Many of the answers were helpful, but I'll choose this one, leaving out the "resplendent," which I think puts it a bit too far over the top. Thanks everybody."

: I like that! It feels as though there is a bit of self-irony in the sentence so this works rather well.

Thanks, Bianca, totally, not sure about the U.K., but this often comes with a touch of irony in America

: Yes, the expression sounds like "lucky us!" but more highflown.

Thanks, Joel, unfortunately, I'm not sure whose lucky nowadays - the world is going under and phase 2 is going to be much worse than phase 1. Good luck!!!!

Thanx, franglish, what's happened to the old crew - I was sick for a while and had to reduce my computer time, now I've been back for a few months, but everyone's gone. Take care!

i think Wunderschönen is like shining wonder in english... "дивный, чудный" in russian
and glory:
also means a luminous ring or halo, esp. as depicted around the head of Jesus Christ or a saint.
apart from:
magnificence; great beauty : the train has been restored to all its former glory.
• (often glories) a thing that is beautiful or distinctive; a special cause for pride, respect, or delight : the glories of Paris.
• the splendor and bliss of heaven : with the saints in glory.
but, of course, saying we, the glorious ones, is firmly tongue-in-cheek in the german text... as it's with 'glorious americans' in the above example

: glorious // To me, "glorious" makes it sound as though glory has already been achieved, which is not how I read the German. But according to the dictionary it can also mean "strikingly beautiful", which would fit the context here.

We're miracle workers
Like Thomas said, ‘wir Wunderschönen’ is really not a standard expression and I’m therefore wondering if ‘Wunder’ is not also an allusion to the so-called Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle), which had transformed West Germany after WW2 and helped make it one of the economic powerhouses.

Discussion
(I have another Kudoz in for "Milchmädchenrechnung"!
