to pass muster

To wit, "pass muster" is a term borrowed from military usage. It relates to coming through a rigorous inspection unscathed.
Example sentence:

"... which/that would not have passed muster by some of the great liberal thinkers..."

Peer comment(s):

agree David Williams : Would work too

neutral Teresa Reinhardt : This avoids the problem Ingeborg ran into, but it's maybe a bit too informal (despite its military history - cf. its devolution into 'cut the mustard')- depending on style

agree Stuart Dykes : Yes, but surely "passed muster with" rather than "by"?

Vielleicht ist hier ein etwas zu starker Fokus auf die "Prüfung" durch die Denker, aber das "bestehen" hat ja einen ähnlichen Beigeschmack...

..would not have measured up to ... (the great liberal philosphers/ thinkers of the day)

I think it needs to be expressed that there is a certain standard which was set by liberal thinkers of the past
Note from asker:
Dear Ingeborg and everybody, "measure up to" would be a superb translation for "NEBEN keinem der großen Denker ... bestehen können". I think what the author wants to express here is that any of the great thinkers would have torn those new concepts to shreds, had he come across them.

I guess there is a fine nuance here; so probably it is more in the direction of "able to withstand the scrutiniy; thanks for pointing that out
neutral Stuart Dykes : Also agree with Asker

I see my "errant ways" now, it is indeed a fine distinction
