In this context it means "turning on for a short time", "sending a pulse". More plainly it is "operating". It is an analogy from fire arms - "triggering" and "shooting" analogies are also used in this Engineering context. I presume that the transducer is an ultrasonic transmitter that sends short acoustic pulses (pings - like a sonar).
