English term

heat sink

GBK English to French Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng
Definition from Network Dictionary:
A heat sink is a metal base or plate onto which one or more components are mounted to absorb, carry away, or radiate the heat generated by the component(s). Heat sinks are generally made of an aluminum alloy and often have fins. All computers require a heat sink. Some also require a fan. A heat sink without a fan is called a passive heat sink; a heat sink with a fan is called an active heat sink.
Example sentences:
The heat sink is secured to a printed circuit board with at least one heat generating component through the fixing portion of the base. The heat sink is improved by forming one or more slots at lateral sides of the base such that one or more deformable portions can be defined on the base. (Free Patents Online)
Heatsinks must be designed in a way that air can easily and quickly float through the cooler, and reach all cooling fins. Especially heatsinks having a very large amount of fine fins, with small distances between the fins may not allow good air flow. A compromise between high surface (many fins with small gaps between them) and good aerodynamics must be found. (The Heatsink Guide)
If your chip surpasses a certain temperature, it will fail and cease to operate. Finding a heat sink will be vital to keeping the chip humming and performing as it was meant to. (eHow.com)

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Jul 15, 2010:
@ Kevin I have seen very often a lot of terms. I would never associate some of them to any other term, especially in other languages, without knowing the nature of both. In fact, a thermal bridge is different from a heat sink. A heat sink is used for cooling an integrated circuit (desired effect). The thermal bridge connects warm and cool parts of e.g. a house and deteriorates the thermal insulation (undesired effect).
chris collister Jul 15, 2010:
Kevin, A thermal bridge (sometimes known a thermal short, depending on whether it is intended or not) is NOT the same as a heat sink, which is intended to dissipate heat away from the component. A thermal bridge can often cause the temperature of components adjacent to a heat source to rise, rather than fall.

I have seen "pont thermique" very often

More on drains... Attention: the EN word "drain" is also used to describe one of the electrodes of a FET (gate, drain and source), and things can get confusing when an FET requires a heatsink! In such a case, use the full "drain thermique"!
chris collister Jul 15, 2010:
drain In the many electronics documents I have translated, a heat sink is often simply referred to as a "drain". Within its context, it is evident that this is a "drain thermique" rather than some other sort of sink.

Radiateur est un terme également très untilisé en informatique.

Avec ventilateur, on utilise souvent le terme contracté "ventirad".

Sans ventilateur : radiateur passif
Example sentences:

Dissipateur thermique

Définition :
Pièce métallique servant à dissiper l'énergie calorifique générée par des circuits ou des composants électroniques.

Sous-entrée(s) :
synonyme(s)
dissipateur n. m.
refroidisseur n. m.
radiateur n. m.
puits de chaleur n. m.

Definition from Wikipedia:
