Italian to English Social Sciences Other

Discussion

luskie (asker) Jul 18, 2010:
no other relevant context, I'm afraid, as this is part of the narration of a dream. these symbols are just seen by the patient while dreaming. hence, they must be physically rather than conceptually distorted.
Oliver Lawrence Jul 18, 2010:
please could you post a little more context, TIA.

true meanings usually masked/ distorted

Hi, I am an avid researcher of symbols, secret societies and world cultures.
Often a symbol can be represented in its "true" form - take the Celtic triskel or cross - while shedding little light on its true meaning, or even taking the original meaning and implementing the symbol for other uses (religions have done this with many native symbols).

At times, the symbol may be "distorted" in its physical representation - again the Celtic cross, whose original shape was a 4 legged cross of equaldimensions without any circular ring around it.

Other typical examples are the Mason compass, this is a distortion of the triangle and once again the Trinity - the shape of the pyramid (3 sides yet 4 visible faces).

I could go on with the GRAIL (true original spelling GRAAL).

Other symbols that are often distorted in meaning are " the Christmas tree, the Sun, the Egg, Celtic knots..etc.

Symbols often misrepresented in form are: the Christmas tree - Yggdrasil, the Holy Graal (often spelled Grail), David's star, the Circle, etc..

if these are physically distorted, one could say "true representations distorted"

--------------------------------------------------

Be sure that the distortion is physical, and note that one distortion usually leads to a next, unless veiled intentionally - this is a tactic to pass down symbols across the centuries without their annihilation.

Oh, as a curiosity, here in Europe we have large pyramids and there are large stone circles (like Stonehenge) in the USA.

All my sources here are linked to firsthand research and dealings with Indigenous and Natural Peoples at the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at the United Nations.

I would translate the sentence as "veiled symbols used by secret societies"....although this text is open to debate in my opinion (not the translation).

If anyone is interested, do some reading up on the Knights Templar and the Quatars.
Peer comment(s):

agree Mr Murray (X) : This is very close. The idea seems to be for me that societies actively hide an esoteric meaning behind a more exoteric one. There's a name for this, but Vincent is close enough. I don't think the translation means active misreading - but active hiding.

Thanks Mr. Murray. It is like concealing a secret, or rather, unveiling certain "layers" of meaning.
agree Colin Ryan (X) : symbols with their true meanings distorted in the manner of secret societies

Thank you, ryancolm !

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer.

the distorted symbols typical of ...

"Distorto" does not usually mean physically twisted or warped so it must be something conceptual.

... typical of secret societies
Peer comment(s):

neutral Vincent Lemma : are you sure of the "typical of secret societies?" appearances can be quite misleading :)

Well, that's what the author of the text seems to be saying ...

symbols typically distorted...

- Symbols and logos of secret (religious, etc.) societies are often distortions of one another.
- There are many symbols like the pentagram that are used and distorted in a variety of ways and even go “mainstream” as can be seen in the below website: (I’ve taken some excerpts from it for your reference.)

http://www.cremationofcare.com/illu_sym_pentagrams.htm
- When you do the research you will find that the Pentagram, also known as the 'five pointed star' is one of the all time favourite esoteric symbols of the secret society network of the Illuminati.
- Here we see the reversed and distorted pentagram on the 'Great Seal' of the USA on the back of the One Dollar Bill.
- The wrought-iron fence surrounding the building (below) contains the Order’s logo, a five-pointed Star of the Incarnation, a medieval symbol whose downward-pointing ray commemorates the Nativity'.
- Many police logos around the world use some variation of the five-pointed star as their logo (amongst other symbols).
- Here we see the logo of the Victoria Police, which appears up-side down, in keeping with negative symbology.

I am adding a quotation.
"The state of being distorted or twisted out of true position... This would be a distortion of their meaning."
