Spanish term

intemperie

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature poetry
This is the final verse of a poem:

'y el sol afuera, su intemperie'

In this case, the meaning of intemperie both refers of the sun being out in the open, outside, but also the meaning derived from the latin "intemperies": desigualdad del tiempo (disparity or unevenness). I have tried to find some term in English derived from the same latin concept but only found "intemperance" which does not really have the same meaning.
Also thought of "and the sun outside, out in its open"

Discussion

Thayenga Jan 29, 2011:
@ Elisa Please provide more context. As it stands right now, I would simply use "its exposure" - which could be just as right as it may be wrong.
Paul García Jan 28, 2011:
previous two or three lines Interesting, but without the previous two or three lines, at least, not really worth considering.
Steven Huddleston Jan 28, 2011:
It's poetry... The technicalities may be more metaphorical than linguistic, but without more verses, especially those before this line, any speculation is little more than wasted effort.
Cecilia Gowar Jan 28, 2011:
To mean "in the open" It has to be "a la intemperie". This obviously has to do with the first meaning, but more context would be useful.
Cecilia Gowar Jan 28, 2011:
Agree with Ángel and kittilina!
Mónica Hanlan Jan 28, 2011:
Rhyme? If the rest of the poem uses a rhyming pattern, we should make sure the we attempt a rhyme... we need more verses!
Ángel Domínguez Jan 28, 2011:
More verses, please! Now seriously, “intemperie” has a connotation of “harsh conditions”, so I guess the previous verses, the overall tone of the poem, will determine whether that’s the case of not.
kittilina Jan 28, 2011:
More text? It would help to know what comes before this.

exposure

Just trying to fit the meaning into the context; sure would like to see the rest of it to make a better judgment.
Example sentence:

And the sun outside, its exposure

Note from asker:
Thank you Steven. The poem is about a shadow, as seen from the inside of a house, that moves on a wall and then it finishes with the sun outside, its exposure.
Peer comment(s):

agree Dr Trevor Stack : I agree it does mean exposed, but we need to know what "su" refers to! Impossible to translate without previous lines - seems a common problem on Proz. I would be tempted to translate as "And the sun outside, exposed" because it sounds more natural in Eng

Thank you, Dr. Trevor! I am assuming that the sun exposes whatever it was that the preceding lines talk about, of course, your interpretation is just as valid.

Note from asker:
Thank you, Liz. And sorry for late reply. "Inclemency" is my second best choice. Another person suggested the sun's "vagaries", referring to the inconsistency of the elements. This is all quite open to interpretation of the symbolism, and the context did not help so much.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Kat Cardona : Pienso que no se refiere a una intemperie: de mal tiempo o inclemencia del tiempo, mas bien creo que se refiere a "al descubierto", por lo que me inclino a sugerir "OUTDOOR"

elements

a definition of "la intemperie" translated into English would be elements. Example: "estar a la intemperie" - to be out in the open, to be at the mercy of the elements.
For any further suggestions regarding an appropriate translation of the phrase in question, I would want to be able to see more of the verse. However, maybe this will be helpful.
Example sentence:

[estar] a la intemperie to be out in the open, be at the mercy of the elements

Peer comment(s):

agree Eileen Banks : I agree, definitely need more of the verse - :)

there's not a cloud in the sky

intemperie can mean uncovered, which would make sense on this context as the sun could be out and not covered by cloud.

Oops, I meant cloud, not clod!
Example sentence:

(From the famous song) "The sun is out, the sky is blue, there's not a clod to spoil the view but it's raining, raining in my heart.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Dr Trevor Stack : it's people who are uncovered or exposed a la intemperie, not the sun!

intemperate, unsettled, unpredictable/randomness

I believe that is the meaning in this case, but the adjective:
"the sun outside, unpredictable"
sounds better than, for instance
"the sun outside, its unpredictability"
If you want to keep the possesive, perhaps you could use:
"its randomness".

in its (own) element

like everyone else I would really like to see a few more lines!

Anyway, it makes no sense to me to say the sun is "outside"; of course it is, that is its place, it is in its own element. Where else can the sun be but outside? (unless of course you are talking of someone's "sunny disposition" (adj) or having the sun shine somewhere.
