Japanese term

展開

Japanese to English Bus/Financial Automotive / Cars & Trucks Business email
I am not sure how to translate 展開 in this context...Can I simply say "I mentioned this in a previous e-mail"?

Discussion

Julian Rippon Apr 14, 2011:
Hi. Yes, I think you're probably on the right track with that. 展開済みメール isn't an expression I have ever come across though. If you read it without worrying too much about the exact grammatical accuracy then I think it probably works!
Deborah Edwards (asker) Apr 14, 2011:
Thanks Tulip and Julian, I think I understand now. I suppose that 展開済みメール means e-mails that were distributed (and which went into some detail).
Deborah Edwards (asker) Apr 14, 2011:
Thanks for your suggestions, Julian and Tulip. I thought that it must have meant something like "mentioned in detail," but then further down is the following sentence: 当時の状況については、以下の展開済みメールをご参照下さい. That would seem to imply that it means something else...
Deborah Edwards (asker) Apr 14, 2011:
Thanks for your suggestion, Soonthon! I had a look at the link you sent, and noted that in all of those situations, they are talking about deploying some kind of software in an e-mail. But I don't think that wouldn't really make sense in this context, as they are just referring to price information that was referred to/provided in a previous e-mail (not software)...

I mentioned this in detail in a previous e-mail

When the context contains 展開, it sounds something was mentioned in detail.

agree Mami Yamaguchi : この場合の「展開」は「情報や詳細を添えておく、付け加える」という意味なので、この訳が適していると思います。

Thanks. I am aware that we normally do not say "I mentioned in detail" in English. I just wanted to tell the asker that the Japanese term indicated something elaborated information was given in the e-mail.
neutral cinefil : なぜ「詳述」ではないのか?

I am not clear about your question. The asker was quick to get the point. Let's move on.

as detailed in a previous e-mail

In answer to your question, yes I think you probably could just say 'mentioned'.

However, although without seeing the various emails it is obviously impossible for me to be sure, my feeling is that it implies that the previous email went into some detail, which is being omitted here. If so, then 'as detailed in a previous e-mail' might be better.

Thanks. There may well be a ように afterwards that the asker has not included. If not then the asker will I'm sure be able to reword as appropriate.

Japanese term (edited): 以前メールにて展開させて頂きました

We have disseminated the information via the previous e-mail message.

情報の「展開」という意味で、disseminateという動詞がぴったりくると思います。

「以前メールにて展開させて頂きました」という記述からすると既に何回かメールのやり取りが有り、両者の議論が展開した訳です。detailに「展開」のニュアンスが有るとは思いません。

Peer comment(s):

neutral Julian Rippon : Unlikely to be 'evolve' or 'develop' in the context. Note that the full sentence is 「以前メールにて展開させて頂きました」 . The original question was changed after posting, so this is not clear from what is now shown. See 'changes made by editors' below for details.
