Spanish term

apreciar vital

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
This is the context:

"Nunca aceptes como cierto nada, venga de donde venga, lo diga quien lo diga, sin antes contrastarlo con tu apreciar vital."

What I really do not understand "apreciar vital" I have seen them used separately, but never together.

Eileen Brophy (asker) Nov 26, 2011:
Thank you again Christine, I think I am going to go with something related to life but I haven't got much further than that for the moment. Think I shall wait and sleep on it. Thanks for your help anyway <3
Christine Walsh Nov 26, 2011:
Brave woman! Under the circumstances I think you should use your best judgement and only make changes if you can get the author to clarify the meaning.
Eileen Brophy (asker) Nov 26, 2011:
You are right Christine, it is not a clear and precise style at all. This is an e-book I have volunteered to translate and it is taking a lot longer than expected because of the style. Thanks for your comment.
Christine Walsh Nov 26, 2011:
I'd say it is a kind of intuition, but possibly also includes the idea of value judgement. I have the feeling that 'vital' in the original means 'inherent to life', rather than 'important'. Possibly 'essential' would work better than 'vital' as an adjective in English, but I do find it all rather vague. On the other hand, I believe I've seen the original, and if so it's not the kind of literature that stands out for clearness and precision.
Eileen Brophy (asker) Nov 26, 2011:
Intuition @ Christine Walsh: Could we take it as being intuition? That is a sort of perceptive insight or vital understanding, isn't it?

vital understanding / perceptive insight

I think they mean sth. like 'gut feeling', but this may be too informal for the context. A couple more:

innate knowledge / inner vision /

With apologies to Arrigo for using his word, I think another option could be 'innate judgement'.
Peer comment(s):

agree Helena Chavarria : In this case I think I would go for "perceptive insight".

with your own experience

To me "apreciar vital" means the way you see life through your own experiences, that is, what you have seen with your own eyes, although it can also be taken as what you feel, of course, and that's where manuel's answer fits in.
