Spanish term

peticinario/peticionaria

Spanish to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s)
I would just like some suggestions on how to handle the translation of these two terms in a Puerto Rican divorce decree. They are used throughout the document to distinguish between the husband and the wife. I have been using "petitioner" and then in brackets [husband] and [wife]. It sounds very peculiar to say male petitioner and female petitioner.

James A. Walsh Feb 19, 2012:
I think Petitioner A and B works... I love how "generic" English can be sometimes!
James A. Walsh Feb 18, 2012:
Well, because they're getting dicorced! I don't think I'd want to be referred to as "husband" in that situation.
philgoddard Feb 18, 2012:
Why not just say husband and wife? Male and female petitioner sounds odd. Or you could use their names, Mr and Mrs X.
Kathleen Shelly (asker) Feb 18, 2012:
example Here are a few sentences: El peticionario cede renuncia y traspasa a favor de la peticionaria todo derecho, título e interés o participación que pueda tener sobre el siguiente bien inmueble: Casa de madera construida en terreno propiedad de los padres de la peticionaria localizada en (address follows) Así también cede renuncia y traspasa a favor de la peticionaria todo derecho e interés o participación que pueda tener sobre los siguientes bienes inmuebles: muebles y enseres de casa.
James A. Walsh Feb 18, 2012:
It would be helpful... ...to see some original context. That way, you're giving us a chance to decide how we'd handle it if it was our translation.
James A. Walsh Feb 18, 2012:
"Petitioner A" and "Petitioner B" I have seen this used before. After the first mention of the man's full name (hereinafter Petitioner A), and the same after the woman's name... Just a thought.
AllegroTrans Feb 18, 2012:
Everything depends on the grounds of divorce - asfaik, where there is prior consent, both spouses can petition jointly, therefore there is no respondent party (which would be the case if one party sues for divorce and the other party is not in agreement). If this is a joint petition, then I think you have to use male petitioner and female petitoner.

neutral AllegroTrans : That is Ok for sentences, but does not deal with the words when used in the headings to the pleadings

male petitoner/female petitoner

It sounds strange to EN-speakers, but it is a consistent method and can be used throughout the document.

joint petitioner - husband/joint petitioner - wife

Asker is in the US. So, if these terms are good enough for Wisconsin, they should work for the rest of the US and, arguably, other EN-speaking countries.
Example sentence:

Joint Petitioner-Wife: First name. Middle name. Last name. Address. Address. City. State. Zip and. Enter the wife's address. On the far right, check divorce
