Spanish term

VIP

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) patient/hospital identification information
This little abbreviation appears on a hospital report, in a box that gives basic information about the patient, before the progress notes begin.

The other data are: Name, Record Number, Room, Treating Physician, Telephone Number ... and then VIP ______. No information is written on the line following the letters.

I think the file may be from Mexico.

What's VIP in this context?

Thanks for your help!

Agree with Charles The connection seems logical: Mexico-> Private healthcare -> VIP treatment for higher paying patients. BTW I love the comment "the people I spoke to didn't know either!" Good luck with this one ;)

Needle in a Haystack Well Liz ... your comment prompted me to talk to the "haystack" ... the hospital in Mexico city (D.F.). And ... the people I spoke to didn't know either! A very nice Patient Services lady spent time looking at their Progress Notes forms only to find that the forms didn't carry this VIP abbreviation, and other people whom she asked also couldn't tell her. Sometimes even when you go the extra mile, you still don't get to the bottom of the haystack!

This was a much nicer Mexican experience than some btw ... I've had people ignore my phone calls. Also had a nice experience with a clinic in the Canary Islands.

Maybe another ProZ colleague will see this later and know exactly what this VIP thing is about ... thank you all for your comments and suggestions.
Charles Davis Jun 6, 2012:
One possibility that occurs to me is that it could relate to medical insurance, or some kind of health scheme, and that it records whether this patient is entitled to the VIP service or not; if he/she is in that category, they put a tick or write "SÍ" in the space following, and if it's left blank it means he/she is not entitled to that service. I really find it difficult to believe that it means "Very Important Patient", and I agree with the point Phil has just made.

"VIP service" could mean an individual room with a TV, better food, all sorts of things.

Remember this is Spanish to English. VIP is a well-known abbreviation in Spanish - though I suspect a lot of speakers wouldn't know what it stands for. A Mexican hospital would not use English terms like "vasoactive intestinal polypeptide," "very intoxicated patient" or even "very important patient".

As Joseph has said, this is part of the patient's basic details, like their name and address - not the syndrome they're suffering from, or how much they've had to drink. I'm 95% certain it means very important person.
Ellen Kraus Jun 6, 2012:
what does the patient suffer from ? perhaps VIP,. abbreviation for vasoactive intestinal polypeptide. Besides, there is much literature on VIP patients, such as e.g. the VIP syndrome to be observed with the treating physicias, let me suggest you read "Emergency care for the VIP and why VIPs - owing to the aforementioned syndrome get less care than the ordinary patient. Another explanation for VIP is "very intoxicated person"

Bit like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Joseph Tein (asker) Jun 6, 2012:
So maybe it's "very important PATIENT" and it relates to some special need or condition?
Joseph Tein (asker) Jun 6, 2012:
Very important person Hi Phil. This is what first comes to mind, of course, but I just don't understand what it would be doing on a chart ... ahh ... I see more discussion comments now ....
Martha Schwan Jun 6, 2012:
I know that but have you read my explanation?

can this help? Pacientes VIP y Confidenciales
Los pacientes que necesitan atención especial (personas minusválidas o pacientes ancianos, por ejemplo) pueden ser designados con un estado vip. Una vez identificado, el paciente vip es indicado por el sistema para ser reconocido inmediatamente por el personal del hospital

I'd have thought very important person was a possibility. They use the abbreviation in other languages.

very important person

As lorenab23 points out in the discussion entries, it may not necessarily mean a celebrity - it could just mean someone requiring special treatment.
