NERVE FIBER LAYER IN GLAUCOMA
Localized defects in the nerve fiber layer appear as wedge-shaped (not spindle-shaped), clearly defined areas that radiate from the optic disc and widen peripherally. They appear on red-free photographs or ophthalmoscopically as dark areas between the bright striations of an otherwise normal nerve fiber layer. Figure 217-2 illustrates a nerve fiber layer defect in the inferior bundle of a patient who has early glaucoma.
