danya (asker) Dec 6, 2012:
thanks everyone, so many good options to pick from!
danya (asker) Dec 6, 2012:
thanks to David for Yogi Berra I think he could match ChVS ;)
Katerina O. Dec 6, 2012:
Oh, we do use deja vu. But only when we get this elusive feeling, not every time we just see something repeatedly.
AxmxZ Dec 5, 2012:
General frequency of use. I've heard deja vu used a gazillion times by Americans, and almost never by Russians.
Rachel Douglas Dec 5, 2012:
@Rita Why do you think that "deja vu" is any more incongruous on Chernomyrdin's lips than on Yogi Berra's?
RitaZ Dec 5, 2012:
I agree with AxmxZ that "deja vu" doesn't quite work here. The "all over again" part is good, though. How about something simple like "never before, yet all over again" ?
David Knowles Dec 5, 2012:
To AxmxZ I like "It's brand new crap all over again", although I admit Rachel's "It's deja vu like you've never seen before" is more elegant. I suspect Mr Black Muzzle was not very elegant.
Rachel Douglas Dec 5, 2012:
@Alex Kh. Why? I don't see that it's at all like the "unheard-of happening" (which is a variation on Berkeley's "The objects of sense exist only when they are perceived" - generally referred to by "If a tree falls in the forest...").
Alex Khanin Dec 5, 2012:
It's variation on Wittgenstein What if something really unheard of happened?
Rachel Douglas Dec 5, 2012:
Right... ... on the Frenchification being possibly out of idiom. On the other hand, people do say "дежавю" in Russian sometimes, don't they? (Besides the TM program, of course.) Also, part of what made it funny from Yogi Berra in the first place was that it's not exactly what one might have expected to be in his vocabulary, either.

Anyway, I like this variation on Yogi Berra. I think it's the most comical we've come up with, so far. David should post it, since he thought of going there, before I did the variation. But "here you go again" that you came up with, and "totally unprecedented" in mine are also good.

So, Danya has quite a few options.
AxmxZ Dec 5, 2012:
Rachel - nice! Although 'deja vu' sounds a bit recherche for V.C. He'd probably say something like "brand new crap all over again."
Rachel Douglas Dec 5, 2012:
Variation on Yogi? It's deja vu like you've never seen before!
AxmxZ Dec 5, 2012:
I actually thought about Yogi Berra and his 'deja vu', but what he said was a tautology, whereas Chernomyrdin's saying was a logical contradiction.
David Knowles Dec 5, 2012:
It's a bit like Yogi Berra (I think it was) It's deja vu all over again!
AxmxZ Dec 5, 2012:
"First time that's ever happened, and now here we go again."

danya (asker) Dec 5, 2012:
in Russia, context has you ;) контекст - это покойный Виктор Степаныч и 8 200 вёрст пустоты.
AxmxZ Dec 5, 2012:
Maybe if we had a bit more context?
danya (asker) Dec 5, 2012:
коллеги, спасибо за варианты но хочется лаконичней и афористичней!

never has this happened, and yet again

Можно ещe сказать "yet here we go again" для второй части, но "and yet again" ближе всего к вашим словам.
Peer comment(s):

agree Anton Konashenok : The most elegant one!
18 мин
neutral Rachel Douglas : I think the only problem with that is that it was said by Victor Stepanovich Chernomydin, whose language would never be described as "elegant". Both "never has" and "yet again" sound very refined and lofty, not colloquial.

neutral AxmxZ : That doesn't really sound like a native-speaker's English.

It's totally unprecedented, and here we go again!

Both components there are nice and idiomatic, and they contradict each other in just the right way. But it's not too laconic, even with sneaking "It's" in, instead of "This is". I'll think about it some more.

It does read well, and I am not sure if it should...
yeah, it does read well, but should it?)
Peer comment(s):

agree Judith Hehir : This reads so well.

Thanks
agree Alexander C. Thomson : Absolutely, this is the most folkloristic, idiomatic suggestion made. It conveys just the right air (and is perfectly grammatical).

Thanks, though Rachel's right. It's too grammatical for Chernomyrdin.
neutral Rachel Douglas : Using "yet" makes it sound as if the speaker had actually thought through a relationship between the two halves of the statement. Whereas the "и" of the original is just "off" enough to make this a classic. And "perfectly grammatical" ain't Chernomyrdin.

agree Uly Marrero : As far as I'm concerned, this is the most idiomatic translation.

we never ran into anything like that...

We never ran into anything like that, and look what we're in now!

Поскольку never и again - понятия взаимоисключающие, то употреблять тут стоит что-то одно.

And look, it happened for the first time once again

Я постарался сделать это выражение одновременно примитивнее, короче и абсурднее, чтобы как можно более приблизиться к неподражаемому стилю великого Черномысрдина! :)

Never before had we seen anything like this and yet, once again, here it is!

I think the past perfect speaks to this happening for the first time previously in the past, as a preface to it's resurgence now.
