Roman Bardachev (asker) Mar 12, 2013:
More context This is an extract from a physician's Clinical Residency Program in Anesthesiology and Reanimatology at a medical institute. It lists several disciplines and cycle duration, e.g.:
- general medicine (8 weeks)
- general surgery (8 weeks)
- general anesthesiology (12 weeks)

The document concludes that John Doe has mastered the full course of the anesthesiology and reanimatology program with the “good” grade and is recommended for independent work under the supervision of the chief of the anesthesiology – reanimatology and intensive care department.

Many thanks to everyone!
Susan Welsh Mar 12, 2013:
more context Roman, since we seem to have a factional divide among answerers here, please give us a context so we can tell who's right and who's wrong!

regional or local anesthesia

or anaesthesia for British English

I don't think you can use "anesthesiology" here, which refers to the overall field, as in "Anesthesiology is the practice of medicine dedicated to the relief of pain and total care of the surgical patient before, during and after surgery." (same website as ref below)

agree The Misha : Don't we just say local? General vs. local, never heard "regional".//Maybe you are right, I don't even want to know.

Hi Misha, yes, "we" do. But doctors? What if you had anesthesia, say, from the waist down, not just to your little toe which is being operated on? I know you could never conceive of such a thing, but... :-)
disagree Alexander Vorobyev : It's a learning course, but not a type of anesthesia.

Thanks, Svetlana, but now I'm getting confused, since we have native speakers saying quite different things!

Adult Anesthesia, Pediatric A., A. in Oncology, etc

neutral The Misha : Еще как разделяем. https://www.google.com/search?q=local vs general anasthesia&...

special topics in anaesthesiology

(UK) или anesthesiology (US)

Peer comment(s):

agree Susan Welsh : Now that we have the context, I think you must be right--but I don't see how "частная' relates to this concept (special topics).

Susan, it's "частная" as opposed to "общая", a medical academic lingo. The students first take a course in general (общая) anesthesiology, then in special topics. The second course may be intended for a narrower audience, too.

privatized anesthesiology, private anesthesiology doctors, practicioners

I would use one of those.
Peer comment(s):

disagree The Misha : Totally off target. This is about general vs. local A. Ever had a root canal?
