French term

coupe semis

French to English Science Forestry / Wood / Timber Forest management
This occurs in a table listing different stages ('stades') of forest development. 'Coupe semis' occurs first, before 'coupe travaux' and then 'peuplement mûr'.
Another line of the table has 'coupe semis'; 'perchis'; 'jeune futaie'; 'peuplement mûr'.

I do not known the sense in which 'coupe' is being used here, and this in turn affects the sense in which 'semis' is used.
Ditto for 'coupe travaux', although I intend to post that as a new question.

I would say that the table is for use by foresters and so can freely use technical terms. I have no context for the table: it stands alone on a solitary page sent for translation.
Proposed translations (English)
3 felling seedling
3 replanted / seeded / area

Discussion

Viviane Brigato Apr 3, 2013:
David Hayes (asker) Mar 29, 2013:
Thanks. I think Wendy is on the right track, but since she did not post her suggestion as an answer, I cannot award her any points. Sorry about that.
Jane Proctor (X) Mar 26, 2013:
I took this is as an area set aside for replanting / reforestation .. but Wendy's suggesting is interesting
David Hayes (asker) Mar 26, 2013:
Could well do. I didn't know if we were talking about 'coupe' as in the action of cutting down or 'coupe' as in felling area.
Wendy Streitparth Mar 26, 2013:
Could this have anything to do with a seed tree cut?

replanted / seeded / area

If we assume that "coupe" means "surface d'une exploitation" in this instance. See Larousse def under "sylviculture".
