işlediği toprak gibi

Turkish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Herkes, ağzından çıkan sözleri, tıpkı içtiği su, işlediği toprak gibi kıt kaynaklardan olduğunu, konuştukça sınırlı payından tükettiğini bilmeliydi.
Proposed translations (English)

Sadly, I only have the Turkish version, and do not really intend to get the translation - I am reading it to improve and extend my Turkish!.

Wider context This is the justification the author gives, looking through her character's eyes, as to why one of the twin hairdressers speaks very little, as opposed to his talkative brother. I just happen to be reading these pages at the moment.

As you know "herkes" refers to everybody (men or women)....

mot-a-mot translation would be like land she/he cultivated, but as this seems to be a literary text, "like cultivated land" seems more eloquant
