Jack slep Sep 9, 2013:
Oh my, you're talking about "concentration" in chemistry, medical and related fields. Concenration is also the result of concentrating, a concentrated mass of something, a concentrate, and it's used in other fields, with shape and dimensionless, e.g., circular stress concentration in metallurgy, or triangular, e.g.,

OK, thank you, Amy - I give up. Maybe it is correct in English, but in Russian it is definitely wrong.
Amy Lesiewicz Sep 9, 2013:
Concentration Concentration can also refer to a "clump" or "grouping" of something; see definition #3 here: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/concentration?s=t
Natalie Sep 9, 2013:
:-((( In this case, dear Jack, I can only repeat: "concentration" is an amount of a substance per defined space; it is expressed in terms of mass per unit volume, and has no shape; it just cannot be round, elongated, right-angled, diamond-shaped, and it cannot be blocklike...
Jack slep Sep 9, 2013:
No, Natalie, I meant the product "концентрация" and not the process "концентрирование"; that is, chromatin is concentrated/condensed in the form of blocks. (Concentration and condensation can be synonomous in English but I doubt that is the case in Russian.) In any event, my friend, I bow to your far superior knowledge in this field. Actually, my real question was the translation of глыбчатая as granular, but I'm just used to other Russian terms for granular in medical fields.
Natalie Sep 9, 2013:
I think I have understood your point, Jack: you mean that "концентрация" is used here in the meaning of "концентрирование", i.e. the same process as condensing. In this case the source also is blatantly wrong, as it should read "глыбчатОЕ концентрИРОВАНИЕ ядерного хроматина", and, moreover, all the same this would be wrong from the scientific point of view (could be used as a kind of laboratory slang only)
Natalie Sep 9, 2013:
Jack, I don't object to blocks/blocklike etc., it is just one of a few synonyms used in this case. But I strongly object to applying "blocklike" to concentration: it is a blatant error in the source, and it is nonsense, actually, as concentration of whatever cannot be neither round, elongated, right-angled, diamond-shaped nor blocklike: the concentration is something that has no shape. At the same time please note that condensation of a material CAN be blocklike, it mans a process of forming blocks.
Jack slep Sep 9, 2013:
This is your field, Natalie, but using глыбчатая for granular and applying it to chromatin instead of concentration just doesn't seem right. If you object to blocks, blocklike, then глыб(чатая) could refer to clumps, clumpy

nuclear chromatin - 142,000

Just saying...
Natalie Sep 8, 2013:
A few statistics:
"chromatin blocks" - about 7,000 results
"chromatin masses" - about 27,900 results
"chromatin granules" - about 31,500 results

Moreover, "chromatin blocks" is used mostly in description of preparation staining (exactly like in Jack's examples).

"Blocks" is certainly not the correct term here.

concentration of granular nucleic chromatin

It is chromatin that is granular, NOT concentration :-)

P.S. Sometimes you can encounter descriptional terms like "chromatin lumps", it is also correct, but "granular chromatin" is more universal.

blocklike concentration of nucleic chromatin

Since chromatin blocks is a common term as is block-like chromatin, it seems reasonable to assum that block-like (blocklike) concentration is a correct term.
