Fino a quel punto, però, sembra che il testo intenda chiaramente che le lettere occupavano meno spazio non solo perché erano più strette, ma anche perché erano scritte appunto in modo da essere più "ammassate" e ravvicinate tra loro.

In genere sembrerebbe il contrario: anche nella pubblicità è il testo grande e largo che ottiene maggior impatto, ma può darsi che i per Romani fosse il contrario. :-)
