l'uso espressivo del segno
Almeno se lo usi in quella frase come è usato nel source.
"Ecco perché la scrittura considerata come attività, cioè come l'uso espressivo del segno, è in grado di aggiungere una dimensione importante alla parola scritta."
Mi sembra che qui intenda l'uso del segno grafico come forma espressiva non necessariamente ed esclusivamente collegata al segno calligrafico, visto anche come l'espressione viene usata in altri passaggi del tuo testo:
"He suggested that the capacity grew from the kinds of movements that accompanied story-telling, chanting and acting out the mythic world — gestures that built up around rhythmic tool use (drumming, slicing, incising) and mark-making using coloured pigments."
