I was wearing my best dress, a dark-green crêpe, with little pearl buttons and a real lace collar, and had rammed my feet into suède high-heeled shoes inside my snow boots.

She liked to be "dressed to kill" (maybe to suit the occasion, to feel like an angel, or...). Although in snow boots, she liked to wear high-heels. How? Ask her!
