Spanish term

sigue y acompaña

Spanish to English Other International Org/Dev/Coop
This refers to a trade union.

Context:

XXXXX sigue y acompaña de manera crítica y constructiva la política europea de transporte, empleo, asuntos sociales y económica.

I'm not really happy with a literal translation, specially in the case of "acompaña", and would welcome any suggestions.

Thanks

AllegroTrans, its a trade union.
AllegroTrans Jan 18, 2015:
It rather depends... ...on what or who XXXXX is. Without breaching confidentiality can you tell us whether we are talking here about a government body, a NGO, a trade union.....or what?

appraises and monitors

There are several other ways you can say this, just a matter of using natural English
"Accompanies" clearly would sound wrong

thanks ET
agree Toni Castano : Just "monitors", it´s more than enough to reproduce the sense of the original.

Don't worry about the distinction. I don't think "acompaña" adds anything significant to the overall meaning.

(the TU) monitors and contributes, both critically and constructively, to European policy-making

My reading.

'acompaña' implies taking an active role, beyond the 'passive' role of monitoring. Given how the EU functions, 'acompaña' probably refers, in practice, to lobbying, street-protests, etc.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Edward Tully : Not policy-making, these policies are already made.//Where in the Asker's ST does it state that XXX has an influence over policy making? You're wrong if you think that this text means that XXX influences policy//Clear now?

"Already made"? - Where did you read that in Asker's ST? European TUs are far more pro-active than you seem to realise... // What 'specific TU' are you talking about? Asker hasn't identified it. And don't just say "wrong" - say "why".

it keeps updated and follows up

Monitoring requires some power that does not appear to have.

monitors and interacts with

The real issue is how to translate "acompaña." My take is that the person or organization in question not only monitors EU policies, but also interacts with them (by asking questions and providing inputs)
