Italian term

unità

Italian to English Bus/Financial Finance (general)
I have a sentence

"Le violente oscillazioni delle quotazioni azionarie, all’interno di un trend fortemente orientato al ribasso, hanno colpito in particolare modo il settore bancario portando le quotazioni di un ampio numero dei titoli europei ad un livello di rapporto tra prezzo di borsa e valore contabile di molto inferiore all' unità"

that I have translated as "Violent gyrations in stock prices, within which a trend that is strongly oriented downwards, have particularly shaken the banking sector. They have pushed the quoted prices of a large number of European securities down to a level in which their stock market price to book value ratios are substantially less per unit"

But I don't understand what the meaning of "unità" is here. Any ideas??

Discussion

James (Jim) Davis Feb 15, 2016:
underpriced vs overpriced This is the price to book value or price to equity ratio. It is the share price divided by the book value per share. If the price is higher than the book value, then you are paying too much for it and vice versa. A ratio below one is underpriced and above one is overpriced. As this person says, banking shares in Europe tend to be heavily underpriced at the moment. To put it more simply, the shares have been going up and down like a yo-yo for years now, but mainly down rather than up.

share value or price

Share price that is, price per share unit (unit of account). A large number of European stocks have quoted market values that are highly undervalued compared to their book values due to market volatility.
(I believe this term is used frequently with reference to the tax basis - unità imponibile--such as person, family, house. Not the context here.)

one / one to one / 1 : 1

That's how I'd see it

Ratios are substantially less than one to one
Peer comment(s):

agree James (Jim) Davis : Bring the ratio close to one. Ratios can be higher than one. If they are expressed as a percentage then it is just above 100%.

neutral philgoddard : This is the meaning, but it's a rather roundabout way of saying their market value is less than their book value.

Tx Phil. Asker asked what Unità means . . . .
