@ Asker I think it's a fairly recent expression, though the sense is clear: turn the clock around so you won't be aware of the time. HOWEVER, I think in your particular context it is indeed meant literally...

@ Asker I agree with Yoann here — in these days of almost universal digital alarms, the light if oftne disturbing I know I always have to do this, for that very same reason, as if I come slightly out of my sleep during the night, the slightest amount of light will prevent my going off again.

Note that fewer people these days have a mechanical clock — likewise, in my case, I could not tolerate the even tiny ticking of an electrically-operated one; but in such a case, turning it to the wall wouldn't make it any quieter!
Judging by the practical nature of the other list items, I wouldn't say this is anything to do with "not watching the clock to see how the sleepless hours pass".

effectivement pas forcément un réveil - une pendule, une horloge....
Je suppose qu'ils pensent que comme cela on ne suivra pas le passage des heures. Pas spécialement un truc d'anglophone à ma connaissance !

Si l'on considère que l'on dort mieux sans pollution lumineuse, le conseil de "tourner le réveil contre le mur" me semble approprié dans ce contexte où il est question de préparer la chambre pour aller dormir. Après va savoir les us et coutumes de nos chers amis anglophones avant d'aller se pieuter ^^...
