Spanish term

El sector agro-mar-alimentario

Spanish to English Social Sciences Other Agriculture - Foods and Beverages
Hi there,

I don't have a lot of context - or any context for that matter.

The term I need help with is "el sector agro-mar-alimentario", which is being analyzed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Robert Carter May 22, 2017:
@Neil It doesn't seem to me to be an official government body, it's referring to a specific industry that this government body (the ministry) is studying. Check out the reference I posted earlier.
neilmac May 22, 2017:
@Robert I wouldn't worry too much about it. Being an official government body, the name will probably change within the next year or so anyway. "Pellillos al mar... "

Although, after having had a cursory look, I am still none the wiser as to what the term actually refers to, particularly the "mar" part. Does it mean fisheries in general, or just the sea in particular. To my mind, "fisheries" is a very broad term that includes commercial fishing and aquaculture (a term which, in itself covers a number of other farming processes, including ornamental fish), but not all of these are specifically related to the sea. I couldn't find a proper definition in that publication, but maybe someone else can.

the food (and beverages) sector of Agromar

Agromar, with over 50 years of experience, continues offering the best quality in preserved products and ready-made dishes. The success of Agromar products and their clear positioning in the “gourmet” segment, have led our preserves to be now be present in the most exclusive Delicatessen restaurants and shops in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, Mexico, USA and Hong Kong, this undoubtedly being the best reward to the work carried out for many years, while also an encouragement to continue working in a dedicated and thorough manner.

since beverages are not mentioned in the Definition of the Enterprise Agromar, I would not include them in the translation

neutral liz askew : The source says "agro-mar..." not "Agromar"

If they allude to fish (by using "mar")it should be borne in mind that fish is included in the overall term "food". Agromar is a food processing enterprise which has nothing to do with agriculture as such, besides processing agricult. products.
neutral Robert Carter : Hi Ellen. As you may notice by the lack of capitalisation, the term being queried is not a proper name, it just describes this industry. It has nothing to do with the company "Agromar".

I fully understand your and Liz`arguments. Nonetheless I find it hard to think that using the term "agro-mar" is sheer coincidence. That I dont expect my answer to be a good solution is documented by the low confidence level.
