Italian term

voto base di partenza

Italian to English Other Education / Pedagogy
I'm translating a list of criteria for students to apply for a second level degree study grant. These include information on the grade achieved in the first level degree, or if they have not yet graduated, the "voto base di partenza". Can anyone explain what exactly is meant by this and the English equivalent? Many thanks in advance.

Discussion

Dan Newton Nov 15, 2017:
Perhaps not necessary to include it in the translation, but it might be worth bearing in mind that the grade is "di partenza" or "di base" because it represents the average grade a student has prior to the defence of their dissertation, for which additional marks are awarded. There's an explanation in English here: http://www.luiss.it/sites/www.luiss.it/files/Legenda USA 201...

Starting base mark

You calculate it this way: average mark multiplied by 11 divided by 3.
It is a way to calculate your starting level.

average marks

Maybe if it fits you can say "grade point average"

As David said above, the Italian voto base di partenza is calculated multiplying the average mark by 11 and dividing by 3.

This is because the average mark is out of 30 and the final mark is given out of 110.

You mayneed to adapt these concepts for and English language readership.

So you would say average grade - the example above gives 88.5, but bear in mind this is out of 110, so you would want to say 88.5/110 or with the consent of the client convert it into a percentage which would be 80.5%

According to this table

it would be a B-
