To assess the effect of potential confounding variables on the estimates of efficacy against the serotypes represented in the vaccine, we used conditional logistic regression in which the statistical model included variables for sex, race, type of physician (private vs. clinic), residence in a chronic care facility, receipt of pneumococcal vaccine, receipt of influenza vaccine (as a possible surrogate for behavior associated with vaccination on the part of either the patients or their physicians), the presence of more than one indication for pneumococcal vaccine, and the number of previous hospitalizations during the study period.
