Wiring

English to French Tech/Engineering General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Bonjour,

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

@ Asker Thanks, Asker!

All is now abundantly clear!

Hi,

Not sure it it was written by a native or by a non-native, but the sentence seems odd to me...

Here is the product: http://medigrowinnovation.com/wp-content/uploads/products/h6...
Tony M Jan 24, 2018:
@ Asker On the face of it, the EN seems curious, if not downright wrong! Was it perhaps written by a non-native?
The first thing is, it is technically unclear, ambiguous — it may be that from your wider context, you can understand it better than we can.
What sort of "LED light" is this?
Why does it have "wiring"?
Does the "with" mean 'connect it to' or 'connect it using'?
Does this LED light have some kind of fixed cable tail, which then e.g. plugs onto a more substantial mains lead?

If you have enough information to answer these questions, then we might be able to help you better.

Connectez la LED au câble d'alimentation

Je pense que cela suffit. Si la LED a des fils, il est évident que ce sont eux qu'il faut raccorder au câble d'alimentation.

disagree Tony M : To start with, it is a whole group of LEDs; but also, this lacks the precision of the original — the LED lamp has a flying lead, which is what must be connected. In technical language, over-simplification is best avoided.

agree writeaway : it's for a household item. Simple is best

disagree Daryo : there is no reason to presume that there is only one LED + you don't connect directly to the diode(s) but to the wiring leading to the diode

brancher le câble de la lampe DEL au cordon d'alimentation

Yes, it's now obvious that this is not native-speaker EN, and no special meaning needs to be attributed to 'wiring' here — it just means 'the wires going to'.

Please note: in order to be able to give a technically accurate answer to this question, it is ESSENTIAL to consult the link provided by Asker in response to my request for more context in the discussion box, which reveals important extra technical information which is essential to avoid over simplification ad absurdum.

Note that, doubtful as the quality of the source text is, it does specifically say 'LED light' — and there's a very good reason for this which must not be ignored by well-intentioned but non-technical contributors !

The "LED light or lamp" uses multiple LEDs, and although the illustrations are not terribly clear, it would be only technically logical to group all the connections to the LEDs together within the rather large housing — indeed, one would be entitlted to assume that there is any any case a certain amunt of supply circuitry in there too — although likewise, we don't know for sure if the "power cable" is actually a MAINS cable, or if there is some intervening PSU (not shown or mentioned in the text). So I believe this is almost certainly just a single 2-core cable — for engineering reasons, i hope they haven't brought out 2 single wires!

I can see no reason why the writer specifically used the word 'wiring' (though there are other idiosyncrasies in the EN here!), other than perhaps in an attempt to indicate that there was a little more circuitry involved than might be imagined.

disagree GILLES MEUNIER : déjà on utiliserait l'impératif en fr et 2, on ne dira jamais la lampe DEL en français, voyant ou DEL....

1° the infinitive is used just as often for this kind of 'instructional imperative' 2° those familiar with the specific product in question will know that this is NOT any kind of 'voyant' or single LED. Your disagree is wholly unjustified!!

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a two-lead semiconductor light source. It is a p–n junction diode that emits light when activated.[5] When a suitable voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence, and the color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy band gap of the semiconductor. LEDs are typically small (less than 1 mm²)
:
Parts of a conventional LED.
The flat bottom surfaces of the anvil and post embedded inside the epoxy act as anchors, to prevent the conductors from being forcefully pulled out via mechanical strain or vibration.
:
There are three main categories of miniature single die LEDs:
Low-current
Typically rated for 2 mA at around 2 V (approximately 4 mW consumption)
Standard
20 mA LEDs (ranging from approximately 40 mW to 90 mW) at around:
• 1.9 to 2.1 V for red, orange, yellow, and traditional green
• 3.0 to 3.4 V for pure green and blue
• 2.9 to 4.2 V for violet, pink, purple and white
Ultra-high-output
20 mA at approximately 2 or 4–5 V, designed for viewing in direct sunlight
5 V and 12 V LEDs are ordinary miniature LEDs that incorporate a suitable series resistor for direct connection to a 5 V or 12 V supply.

it depends on the real execution. The figures are very schematic. It's also unclear, how plus and minus are connected, either by twisting, solderring, crimping or terminals. The only item I can presuppose is, the LED is limited in current.
