Spanish term

técnica del encañizado

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Architecture Ceiling architecture / mouldings
Hi all,

I'm working on translating brochure for a renovated property in Barcelona from Spanish (ES) into English (UK). The phrase in question appears in the section about how the ceilings in its rooms were made. Please see below:

Any help please? Many thanks :)

Definición
Técnica de fabricación de cubiertas que consiste en cubrir las vigas de los techos con cañizos entrecruzados (tejido o enrejado de cañas) para guarnecerlos de yeso y formar cielo raso.

“Other highlights include the sand stone vaulted ceiling and ecclesiastical style sculpted sandstone pillars in the basement, Victorian encaustic tiles at the front and in the lobby and a very early reed and plaster ceiling which we believe dates back more than 200 years.”

More techniques; Lath and plaster is the generic term, as pointed out by Muriel, but I put reed, as lath is frequently wood, whereas reed is more specific here:
In the United Kingdom and its colonies, lath and plaster was often used for interior partition walls and the construction of ceilings, before the introduction of plasterboard in the 1930s.[1] In the U.K., riven or split hardwood laths, of random lengths and sizes, were often used. Splitting the timber, as opposed to sawing in straight lines, followed the grain of the timber which greatly improved strength and durability. Also, reed mat was used as a lath. The technique derives historically from the earlier, more primitive, wattle and daub.

There are suggestions that construction techniques such as lath and plaster and even cob may have evolved from wattle and daub ...

From what I have seen, wattle and daub is the predecessor of this technique but is more primitive. The example here is more decorative, and has been created by an architect.
Peer comment(s):

agree Muriel Vasconcellos : Also 'lath and plaster', which is a more generic term, and 'wattle and daub'.

Thanks, Muriel, though I think lath includes wooden slats, and wattle and daub is mud, and more primitive--this is the creation of an architect.
agree Charles Davis : I agree with you: I wouldn't use lath (slats) or wattle (woven thin branches) here. Strictly speaking I suppose it's the reed technique, since the plaster is separate, but "reed and plaster" is what it's always called. // I wouldn't go that far! :-)

Thanks, Charles! Yes, all same technique but using different materials. I see that the previous Kudoz reference posted by Andres was yours, so you will know all this.// Well, it rang a bell at least!

neutral bigedsenior : wattle and daub uses clay; whereas reed and plaster obviously uses plaster which is a mixture of lime, sand and water.
