the fact that the environment is mentioned next has no bearing on the meaning of "applicable R&D" - it simply means that their R&D is looking for something immediately applicable, as opposed to doing any theoretical research applicable only indirectly in the long term.
BTW, that's exactly what you would expect from "applied R&D", the kind of R&D most companies would be only interested in. Sounds like marketing speak from the school of stating the blindingly obvious ...
