English term

Continental

English Bus/Financial Insurance
I am not sure what is meant exactly by 'Continental' in the following context:

"If the insured member suffers permanent partial disablement as a result of an accidental cause, [Company] will pay a percentage of a Sum Insured amount to the insured member according to the Continental Scale of Disabilities".

a type of scale

Used in Personal Accident policies, the Continental Scale is an extension of the “Loss of Limbs or Eyes” benefit and provides cover for the loss of things like body parts with a reduced sum payable.

Asker: I think it may have originally referred to the European continent (allowing them to keep things uniform).
Note from asker:
Yes, it is a type of scale, but my question, actually, is: why is it described as "continental"?

I put the phrase for "Continental Scale of Disabilities".

"A term used in a Personal Accident policy. It is an extension of the “Loss of Limbs or Eyes” benefit and adds cover for the loss of, for example, a hand, an ear or a toe with a reduced sum payable."

disagree Daryo : whatever refs you've found, you misinterpreted them + you completely ignored that it's a "scale", a type of list.

disagree AllegroTrans : the term is an adjective applied to "scale" - you have explained it with something else entirely

Basically it's a list of how much various permanent losses are compensated in proportion to what is a "total 100% loss"

Why it should be called "Continental" is a bit of a mystery, but it seems to be used as a reference by insurance companies all over the world.

Thank you!

agree AllegroTrans : Agree that "continental" is a mystery, but it's an industry term apparently and therefore a "fixture"
