Pronunciation is not as simple as it seems. As an example, the name of the Russian space station is pronounced as MERE by English-speaking people. With the Ukrainian sound I (or Y) it is even harder. There is no such sound in English. It is a back vowel, sounding more like a French é in fermée. And R sounds like a Spanish or Italian 'R'.

I think that the transliteration "myr" would be much more appropriate, exactly because of this "i".
Ukrainian "и" is commonly transliterated as "y" in English.

I am not saying it's exactly the same sound. I think the asker doesn't care about transliteration at all (they need Ukrainian spelling), but "mir" transliterates into Ukrainian as "мір", not "мир".

It's simply to read - name the letters (as in Latin: you read exactly as you write), but:
The sound of character *i* has to be muffled, and it'll be the difference between this word in Russian - where *i* sounds clear( as in word "win"). I am not sure that there is in English this dull *i*though.

I glanced at Enc. Brit.- they wrote Sumy(Сумы-рос.,Суми-укр.)- so, it\'s supposed to be this sound (ы-и)-but I just don\'t remember this word as \"MYR\".Well, I wouln\'t deny it for this reason- may be I missed something.
