consume refers to "consumption", what is eaten, absorbed.
e.g.: your car consume petrol
utilise refers to "tool", what is used as an extention.
e.g.: you utilise your knowledge to complete a task
the difference is that at the end, with utilise, you still have your "tool", whereas with consume, you need to renew whatever it is you used.
