Spanish term

jarabe de expedicion

Spanish to English Science Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng high fructose corn syrup
This regards the making of corn syrup--one of the final steps before is is called "liquid dextrose". It was originally expressed as "S.S." in the Spanish text. I believe the suggested meaning of "jarabe de expedicion" for S.S. is correct, but what is this in English??

Most welcome! Karen

Now I see... this must be soluble solids. I think I will be able to give you a reference, Percentages appear
in the context of talking about soluble solids.
Non-ProZ.com Feb 6, 2005:
Exactly! I think they are expropriating the "S.S." from English within the Spanish text, but I can't be sure. It appears as "hasta el 60% de S.S. obteniendo finalment dextrosa liquida". As the refining process goes on, it reappears as "..en donde se concentra al 77% de S.S." Starch slurry in Spanish is "almidon en lechada". This is really annoying! :-)
Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Feb 6, 2005:
I am almost certain that jarabe = syrup (literal meaning, drink..dictionary meaning, syrup).
This accounts for one of the "S"s. The other S could be starch or sucrose, but of course the
question remains regarding how to translate expedicion..
Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Feb 6, 2005:
It's likely that S.S. is indeed starch slurry. Descrptions on google mention stach slurry as a precursor
of corn syrup. But that's for S.S. I am not sure if this is the same as "jarabe de expdicion" though...
Non-ProZ.com Feb 6, 2005:
Te doy las gracias, Zareh. Resolvermos este misterio, eh?
Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Feb 6, 2005:
Karen:
Jarabe is an Arabic-derived word. It literally menas drink.
will investigate further.

starch slurry

S.S. is probably an English term already, and starch slurry is the only element of the process I've found that matches these initials. Could this be it? Check out the explanation of starch slurry and its usage on this page, where you'll also find some great vocabulary:
