Definition from NC glossary of forestry terms:
The area below the forest canopy that comprises shrubs, snags and small tree. Because the understory receives little light, many of the plants at this level tolerate shade and will remain part of the understory. Others will grow and replace older trees that fall.
Example sentences:

असहमति का स्वागत मैंने अनेक विकल्पों पर विचार किया था। मुझे निम्नस्थ वन-वितान अपेक्षाकृत अधिक संप्रेषणीय लगा। जहाँ तक सरलता और स्वीकार्यता की बात है मेरा मानना है कि पारिभाषिक शब्दों को प्रचलन में लाने के लिए व्यक्तिगत ही नहीं सांस्थानिक प्रयासों की आवश्यकता होती है। शुरुआत में अनेक शब्द क्लिष्ट लगते हैं लेकिन व्यवहार में आने पर ग्राह्य हो जाते हैं। रिजर्व बैंक की शब्दावली से आप यह बात आसानी से समझ सकते हैं।....असहमतियों से होते हुए ही ठोस सहमति बनती है इसलिए असहमति का स�

मैं लिप्यंतरण का अंध पक्षधर नहीं हूँ मगर जब किसी पारिभाषिक शब्द के लिए हम नए शब्दों के निर्माण करते हैं तो यह आवश्यक है कि उसकी स्वीकार्यता और सरलता पर भी विचार करें। मैंने असहमति नहीं जताई है, इतना ही आग्रह किया है कि क्या कोई सरल विकल्प हिन्दी में हो सकता है?अगर आपके सामने सन्दर्भ नहीं हो तो क्या "गहन वन भीतर" से understory की संकल्पना समझी जा सकती है? कृपया विचार करें और इस बात के साथ कि यह महज अनुरोध है, असहमति नहीं।

क्लिष्टता का आसान विकल्प लिप्यंतरण नहीं बल्कि चर्चा और माथापच्ची से नए शब्द की ढूंढ़ हो, ऐसा मुझे लगता है। इसलिए चर्चा में अपनी राय देने के लिए शुक्रिया अमर जी। मैंने सही शब्द तलाशने की कोशिश की। एक और विकल्प "गहन वन भीतर" या ऐसा ही कुछ हो सकता है। बताएँ कैसा रहेगा?

ललित जी, क्या इसके लिए कोई सरल और सहज विकल्प नहीं हो सकता ?
यद्यपि आपके सुझाए अनुवाद से अर्थ स्पष्ट होता है तथापि यह शब्द आम लोगों के लिए क्लिष्ट है।

अंतर्वन, अंडरस्टोरी I feel understory can be used as it is. If you want to translate this term, you can consider अंतर्वन which is close to the concept.
