A stroke is a condition in which the brain cells suddenly die because of a lack of oxygen. This can be caused by an obstruction in the blood flow, or the rupture of an artery that feeds the brain. The patient may suddenly lose the ability to speak, there may be memory problems, or one side of the body can become paralyzed.

आघात
आघात सरल शब्द है। प्रचलन में है। साथ ही, वैज्ञानिक तथा तकनीकी शब्दावली आयोग के "रोग-निदान एवं विकृति-विज्ञान शब्द संग्रह" में भी यही दिया गया है।
हृदय आघात, मस्तिष्क आघात जैसी अभिव्यक्तियां आम हैं। अखबारों में भी इसी रूप में लिखा जाता है। हालांकि कुछ जगहों पर स्ट्रोक भी लिखा जाता है।

वर्तमान संदर्भ में देखें तो "मस्तिष्क का दौरा" या "मस्तिष्क का स्ट्रोक" पढ़ने, बोलने में कुछ अटपटा लगता है। गूगल महराज पर नज़र डालें तो वह भी "मस्तिष्क आघात" के प्रचंड पक्षधर जान पड़ते हैं।
