The state of the art (SOTA, sometimes cutting edge or leading edge) refers to the highest level of general development, as of a device, technique, or scientific field achieved at a particular time.

Овде је поента у томе да се "information which is state of the art" односи на информације које нису дострупне широј публици (not "in the public domain on the date of disclosure, i.e. published or generally accessible") али унутар струке нису никаква тајна, јер свако ко прати најновија достигнућа у датој струци мора да је већ упознат.

Over time, use of the term increased in all fields where this kind of art has a significant role. In this relation it has been quoted by the author that "although eighteenth-century writers did not use the term, there was indeed in existence a collection of scientific and engineering knowledge and expertise that can be identified as the state of the art for that time"
