English term

specific shop layout

English Tech/Engineering Architecture shop layout
what would you call the layout of a shop (in a shopping precinct) that has windows and/ or doors, separating the inside of the shop from the gangways in the precinct?

As opposite to an open-plan shop, with no partition between the inside of the shop and the outside world...

TIA

I guess I haven't expressed myself clearly :( what I mean is an closed/ enclosed shop layout. Thing is, I don't know the official UK English name for this kind of layout. Thanks everybody for your patience!
Kim Metzger Sep 1, 2005:
Good girl! I hope it gets fixed soon.
Agnieszka Hayward (X) (asker) Sep 1, 2005:
@Kim but when posting the question I HAVE selected UK English... no idea, why it got lost :(
Kim Metzger Sep 1, 2005:
Dear tygru, it's now possible to select the "dialect" you need: English UK or English US. There are probably big differences in the terminology used.
Agnieszka Hayward (X) (asker) Sep 1, 2005:
@Rita yes, a shopping mall. gangways are where you walk, from shop to shop, i.e. the 'non-shop' area
RHELLER Aug 31, 2005:
is this a shopping mall? not sure what you mean by gangways

closed-fronted shops

I'm familiar with the expression "open-fronted shops" and then "glass-fronted" etc.
However, these are all the relevant "closed-fronted" examples I could find:
The closed-fronted section of the building bore traces of stall divisions.
It was a depressing place with rows of open fronted shops housing billiards tables and rows of closed fronted shops with prostitutes sitting in the front window looking bored as they knitted woolly socks.
The last time I saw John Swan was many years ago selling "Xmas Paper etc" from a closed fronted shop in Rye Lane...
One of the two Piazza entrances is an arcade of closed-fronted shops (fig.6), which continue along the E side of the hall.
Peer comment(s):

agree juvera : Of course all units are closable for fire and security reasons, but open or closed fronted shop will do fine.

Thanks, Judith. I can only suppose the standard facade does not have to be mentioned that often.

I think the only difference would be "shop" instead of "store"

storefronts vs. wide-open entryways

These are US English suggestions, but maybe they will help. A storefront implies doors and windows.

The buildings each feature a distinct character appropriated to its use. Each retail façade is unique with varied colors, textures and heights. Undulating storefronts with large windows and wide-open entryways facilitate window-shopping.

In large, windowless malls, the retail store itself often becomes the display because customers can see most of the store through wide-open entryways.
