French term

toute une mythologie du surnaturel

French to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Filipine cinema
This is from an article covering a small number of directors of Filipine cinema. Obviously I get the basic gist here, but I would like to find a concise way to say this here.

Une autre particularité du cinéma philippin, tant commercial qu'indépendant, et l'enthousiasme pour toute une mythologie du surnaturel nichée dans les montagnes perdues et les forêts ténébreuses de l'archipel.

Discussion

Nicole Acher Mar 8, 2021:
I agree with Orniston - I think the "et" before "l'enthousiasme" should be "est". It refers back to and describes "Une autre particularite..."
Cyril Tollari Mar 8, 2021:
My take "Tout un" may mean "véritable" (ie Qui correspond pleinement à sa définition)

I think you use "quite a" in English for this.

Replace "toute une" by "une véritable" in Eliza's examples and I feel you get the same meaning in French.
Eliza Hall Mar 8, 2021:
"A whole mythology of the supernatural" -- @ Daryo Daryo's right. A few examples where the turn of phrase clearly means "a whole mythology/an entire mythology":

FR text about J.R.R.

» Mircea Eliade, Le Sacré et le Profane, Gallimard, 1965, p. 173 (it's "whole mythology" in the English version).
Saeed Najmi Mar 7, 2021:
I guess so, yeah.
ormiston Mar 7, 2021:
Shouldn't the "et" Read "est"?

pantheon

If you weren't going to just say "an entire supernatural mythology" (which I think would be ok anyway?) maybe "a whole pantheon of supernatural entities"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Daryo : if they are animist, you could hardly see it as any kind of "pantheon"

agree philgoddard : Good idea, and I think your other more literal version is fine too.

agree SafeTex : A dictionary says: "all the gods of a people or religion collectively" so like Phil, I like this suggestion too

agree Yvonne Gallagher
17 hrs
disagree Eliza Hall : A pantheon is a group of all the gods of XYZ religion. It's not the same thing as a mythology.

disagree Andrew Bramhall : An extrapolation too far, IMHO;

any amount of supernatural mythology

Une autre particularité du cinéma philippin, tant commercial qu'indépendant, et l'enthousiasme pour toute une mythologie du surnaturel nichée dans les montagnes perdues et les forêts ténébreuses de l'archipel

Another peculiarity of Philippine cinema, both commercial and independent, is its relish for any amount of supernatural mythology nestling in the hidden mountains and dusky forests of the Archipelago.

"any amount of" = a totally unrestricted amount, with no upper limit, or ceiling.
Peer comment(s):

agree Daryo : as part of the whole proposed sentence, sounds really good!

Thanks
disagree Eliza Hall : "Toute une X" isn't "any amount of X." Any amount can mean anything from near-zero to a ton; "toute une" does't include "near zero" in its meaning.

Thanks, but if you describe a sportsman, say as " having any amount of skill", you mean he has skill to burn, not that his skill levels are near to zero;same here; it means an abundance/ over-abundance/surfeit!!!

The whole category of mythology relating to the supernatural

This is my interpretation of what the author intends to convey.

It probably sounds better to say "the whole mythology relating to the supernatural", as per Daryo's helpful comment.
Peer comment(s):

agree Barbara Cochran, MFA : I like this interpretation, too.

Thanks, Barbara!
neutral Daryo : you don't really need "category", otherwise yes

Good point - thanks, Daryo
neutral ormiston : Plus "a" whole mythology as it's unknown. Otherwise agree.
12 hrs
I think the text refers to an existing mythology; it doesn't say that it's unknown.

the rich mythical realm

You said you were looking for something concise! I think the "supernaturel" is already understood in the word "mythical".
Peer comment(s):

agree SafeTex : or "rich realm of mythology"
