Hebrew term

סינון / מיון

Hebrew to English Medical Medical (general) Clinical trials
What is the difference between סינון and מיון in a clinical trial? I understand that סינון is the screening period, but what is מיון?

Discussion

Arthur Livingstone Oct 27, 2013:
I do apologise. I rushed into that answer almost without thinking and the 5 was a typo. Of course it's two different words. The screening is for the trial itself, whereas the next stage is to allocate the subjects to the different arms of the trial and the word I would use is "allocation". See: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12505244
Itzik Greenvald Mivtach Oct 27, 2013:
I'm still puzzled ... well I believe that screening is the word for "SINUN"; both me and Arthur concur on that. As for assignment (which is the correct form - I apologize - not assigning) I am not 100% sure. Hopefully other expert might offer their insights.
moshiachnow (asker) Oct 27, 2013:
Itzik asked for more details: They are clearly two periods. The first is the screening, and assignment sounds like a reasonable term for MIYUN, though I am not sure yet. Here are a few lines from the document:
ספירת דם, מבדלת, טסיות, וכימיה של הסרום יבוצעו בתהליך המיון למחקר
בדיקת שתן יבוצע בתהליך המיון למחקר
שאיבת מח עצם תבוצע בתהליך המיון למחקר
as opposed to
בדיקות גופניות והערכה של המצב התפקודי יבוצעו בתהליך הסינון למחקר

screening

That's the word used in clinical trials. A reason for failure to be accepted for a clinical trial is "failed screen".

Note from asker:
I understand. Screening is the proper term for SINUN - the question remains what is the proper term for MIYUN...

Screening / assigning

I believe that there is a difference.

Screening is the initial phase of checking whether the patient qualifies to participate in the trial or not.

Assigning, on the other hand, is the act of dividing the different patients into groups of treatments / placebo.
Although sorting is the word for MYIUN in Hebrew, I believe that in this context, the word assigning, which is HAKTZA'A, is better suitable and more frequently used.

If you provide more context I believe I'd be more sure of my suggestion

Thanks, I just posted additional information in the discussion.
