Italian term

Lavorazione a campagne

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general)
Talking about smelters (ferrous and non-ferrous metals).

The phrases are:
Al XXX il materiale viene lavorato a campagne; 3 pezzature in maniera alternata: 5-30 mm, 30-80 mm e >80 mm.

And then:
La tecnologia permette di ottenere una migliore qualità dell’alluminio, aumentandone la purezza e di conseguenza il valore di vendita; al momento l’unità è distaccata dal resto dell’impianto e la lavorazione avviene a campagne

This is all for a Case study. No definition of 'campaign' seems to work. 'Campagna pubblicitaria' wouldn't make any sense. And it doesn't have anything to do with the countryside. The only thing I can think of is that it is at intervals, or perhaps on an as-needed basis. But I've never come across this term before.

Discussion

Rachel Fell Mar 26, 2017:
I see it in the context of pharmaceuticals - they're mostly PDF or book links, but:

Rachel You're right, though I've never seen "campaign" used in that way before, and it doesn't get many hits. "Batch production" would be understood by everyone.
Rachel Fell Mar 26, 2017:
Could this not be relevant, where campaign production of successive batches and continuous production are both mentioned?

Patrick Hopkins Mar 26, 2017:
Yes, I agree with you, INTERVALS looks good. It's not a technical term regarding smelting, it's simply further explaining what they already wrote: ALTERNATING three groups 5-30, 30-80, > 80.

Processed in lots

Campagna means a serie of activities aimed at achieving a specific purpose within a given time but although this is similar to the definition of the same word campaign in English, I wouldn't use it here.

Lot could be an alternative, although it doesn't really include the planned time period aspect. You could say programed /alternate lots.
