From what Cicabarth explained the phrase is "afastados por motivo de doenca" or impossibilitados de trabalhar, both could be "on sick leave" what do you think Paula?

estranged

If "afastados" is being used in the sense of a couple who are not together anymore, the word in English is "estranged"...

The reason I am not completely sure is because they seem to be talking about work...
