Decisamente un anno importante. Quando il 24 marzo Il Caimano è stato distribuito in 370 copie con marchio Sacher - la casa di produzione e distribuzione di Moretti (53 anni) e Angelo Barbagallo - il film, per quotidiani e tg, è diventato il fatto del giorno, riempiendo pagine di commenti e palinsesti di dibattiti cultural-politici. Il Caimano ha trionfato, almeno in Italia, a tutti i livelli: miglior incasso mai ottenuto da Moretti al botteghino (quasi 7 milioni) e un ottimo raccolto di premi (6 David, 9 Ciak d’Oro) per lui e il suo ottimo cast, oltre alla presenza in concorso al festival di Cannes. Il regista ha anche promesso di ritornare in tempi brevi sul set. Diversamente da La stanza del figlio, caratterizzato da un’universalità di sentimenti, Il Caimano ha però contribuito ulteriormente a connotare politicamente il lavoro di Moretti, con tutti i vantaggi e gli svantaggi del caso.

Definitely an important year. When The Caiman was distributed on March 24, in 370 prints by Sacher - Moretti (53) and Angelo Barbagallo’s production and distribution company - the film became the hot topic in the media, filling up pages of newspaper editorials and TV schedules with cultural and political debates. The Caiman triumphed, at least in Italy, on every level: Moretti’s best ever box office revenue (almost 7m euros) and an excellent selection of awards for him and his exceptional cast (6 Davids, 9 Golden Ciaks), as well as a competition screening in Cannes. The director has also promised he’ll be back on set very soon. The Caiman is a very different film from The Son’s Room which had a universal appeal. This new production has continued to further politicise Moretti’s work, with all the subsequent advantages and disadvantages.
