“BAM-BARA-BAM~ BAM-BA-BA BAM-BARA-BAM~~”

In the fanfares that one hears at ceremonies or celebrations, there is one instrument that will appear almost without exception. It is, of course, the instrument that signals the start of the fanfare – the trumpet.

In the movies, in scenes where we see the old military band trumpet players performing, their instruments are made of long and slender pipes, without any kind of special apparatus. They look just like the vuvuzela blown by the supporters at the South African World Cup. If there is any difference, it is that the vuvuzela let out only a single ‘boong-boong’ sound, whereas the trumpets can produce a number of different notes. How is it possible to make different pitches using a trumpet made up of just a simple tube, without any pistons or buttons to press?

In a musical instrument, the pitch is determined by the frequency (the number of vibrations of the air in a given time). If the wavelength is long, the frequency is low and produces a low note; if the wavelength is short, the frequency is high and produces a high note. Basically, the pitch of the note from a wind or brass instrument is determined by the length of the pipe. Wind and brass instruments produce a sound by causing the air inside the pipe to vibrate; if the pipe is long the wavelength will be long, and if the pipe is short the wavelength will be short. As a result, long pipes produce a low sound and short pipes produce a high sound. For example, even though it’s the same instrument, a 1.3m-long trumpet will generate a C-flat, but a trumpet just a little shorter than this will produce the note a semitone higher, a C.

In this way, the fundamental tone for each individual pipe is the sound when one blows on the pipe, produced by the basic waveform with an anti-node (a ‘peak’ or a ‘trough’) at each end of the pipe and a node in the middle.

I'm a native English speaker from the UK who's been living in Korea for over 11 years and translating (mostly) academic papers for over 9 years.

I previously studied medicine at the University of Cambridge, and also have experience studying in a Neuroscience laboratory at Seoul National University.

I enjoy the process of translating academic papers and feeling like I'm learning as I work.

In addition to my expertise and experience, I think my biggest strengths are communication and flexibility. If you work with me, I'll always be receptive to feedback, and I'll do my best to honour any requests relating to translation style or specific vocabulary.
