IS ACCOUNTİNG BORING?

If we ask anybody: ‘What is the first thing comes

to their mind when they hear the word accounting?’

What do you think the responses would be?

I bet ‘boring’ will be the most popular reply by far.

Why am I so confident?

Because I am an ex-accountant myself!

You have no idea how many ‘boring accountant’

jokes we hear when working in the profession.

So I agree on ‘boring’ but like any other job, it has

pros and cons. Will come to pros in a second but

wouldn’t you agree that all jobs are boring after

a while anyway? Once they become a routine?

If you are the lucky one and you make a living by

doing what you like to do: That is excellent.

Ideal but rare. Most of us are not that lucky, aren’t we?

So, what do we do? Remember the famous motto:

‘Do what you like or like what you do’.

Trying to like, may seem hard. But you can try to

discover your unique abilities fitting job

requirements.

For instance; attention to details, ability to see

things others don’t, physical strength/durability to

cope with long working hours are main traits that an

accountant expected to have.

If you think you have them, or matching

at least one of them, you can then focus on

your niche to move forward.

If that does not work, then find other related fields,

auditing for example, that looks like

a better match for you.

Accounting gathers all financial information to produce

financial reports.

Having access to critical business

information makes you feel more confident and

powerful by raising your bargaining power.

Producing financial statements will quickly boost

your network of people.

Because those reports addressed to business owners, shareholders,

auditors, top management, managers, creditors, insurance

companies, banks and financial institutions.

So, building a prestigious network at an early stage of

your career would be another advantage.

Accounting principles are applicable worldwide and

applies all companies regardless of the industry.

To be able to search jobs in different industries is an

important privilege especially in economic downturns or

when you have to change your job.

Most employees don’t have that luxury as their skills

needed only for a specific job and in a specific industry.

You have better chance to get a job in another country

as accounting principles accepted globally.

Please have a look at the background of CEO’s

worldwide, you will notice that most have CFO

backgrounds.

Means they started with accounting.

Lastly, accountants have better luck climbing to top management levels

as they already had a bird’s eye view to all departments before.

Plus they have the profitability and efficiency scores of each

department comparative to each other.

These are the pros of being an accountant from my perspective.

I hope you changed your initial view and

started thinking like:

‘Looks like accounting is not boring at all’

If you are a newcomer to accounting profession and started to

feel better already: Then I am a happy man!

dayanıklılığa sahip olmaktır.

Eğer bu özelliklerin veya en azından bir tanesinin

sizde varsa, o zaman sizi farklı kılan o özelliğinize

odaklanıp yolunuza devam edebilirsiniz.

Eğer bu işe yaramazsa, özelliklerinize

daha uygun gördüğünüz bir başka ilgili alan bulun;

örneğin denetim gibi.
