French term or phrase: Vide sanitaire
Hello, this term appears in a list of features for the construction of a house. It says that the floor can be constructed over a basement or 'vide sanitaire'. The following link describes what functions a 'vide sanitaire' performs in French, but I can't find the correct term in English. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

underfloor space
Explanation:
You must be careful with this one. It depends on whether it is closed or open. For our house, normally it should be closed (regulations), but my husband made an access point so that when we are put on the sewer mains that it would be easier.

Here's what Dicobat has to say:

GB: crawl space.

agree  Miranda Joubioux (X): only if it is accessible - there are strict regulations in France in this regard.

neutral  B D Finch: Unless the space is designed to be accessed, it isn't a crawl space. The primary reason for having these vides sanitaire is for underfloor ventilation and damp prevention, so I think Miranda has the right answer.

disagree  Tony M: The whole point about a vide sanitaire is just that: it is either a crawl space, or a floor void, but it is not high enough to be used as a basement
