We would not say "take off a medication" that is going through the IV in the US, and from what you said, it does not sound like the actual IV tubing was removed from the patient. So it would be better to say "stopped/discontinued the medication when he/she saw what was happening"

oops, just realized I was being a bit dyslexic in my reading of other answers - was reading "took it off him" instead of "took him off". So the above answers are another good option.
